I'm afraid it's not that simple. Analysing the sensor data is the core of the Sylphyo, and Aodyo is unlikely to give up this technology so easily. The synthesiser code is perhaps less of a problem, it's not that special. But then there's the radio link to the Link, whose technology is probably licenced to Aodyo. What should be released anyway, the firmware and documentation or what?

I know a similar situation from Eigenharp. A freelance developer took over there, but the instruments needed software that didn't even belong to the manufacturer. The developer could only keep the instruments in operation alive. That was also important, the big Eigenharp Alpha cost more than 4,000 USD. I even had to make deep adjustments to my Mac system for my little Pico to keep it playing for a while. Finally gave up.

I'm not saying it's hopeless to aim for open source, but the Sylphyo is a complex system and an intellectual achievement. Even if Aodyo were to say ‘keep going on your own’, that would be generous, but not necessarily successful ...

However, I would be very happy if it were possible to continue in some form. Perhaps the developers will find a way, perhaps via another company.

You can only do this via an audio connection.

small stereo plug into the audio output of the Sylphyo and on the other side of the cable into the audio input of the Mac (but I don't know if this works) or better (and this works) into an audio interface.

if you have an Aodyo Link box, go from the two line outputs to line inputs of an audio interface. Or try instrument inputs. For me it sounds best when I use a DI box to go into the mic inputs of the interface. The line outputs of the Link are unbalanced, so use TS (Tip-Sleeve aka "mono") plugs.

Since I'm using the hydrophilic inserts in the Sylphyo mouthpieces, there is significantly less moisture internally. I don't recall ever getting the "dripping out the bottom" syndrome since I started using them.

Ah, you have the labeling on the plugs. Yes, then the shrink tubing can be used without removing the plugs :-)

I have a cheap Brother labeling machine (P-Touch D210, up to 12 mm). The normal tapes come off plugs and cables. I tried a flexi-tape, which has held up so far. But shrink-wrap is certainly better.

Hello for my part I slide a small roll of paper towel like handkerchief or paper towel inside the tip and it does the job very well and almost free ;) it changes absolutely nothing to the breath or the dynamics of Sylphyo

In general, I meant that the inventive and programming capacity should largely go into sophisticated musical playability. The gimmicks with fader groups, strumming etc. seem out of place to me, any mobile phone can do that better.

No, I meant that more generally. If someone wants or needs different Sylphyo settings for different internal sounds, they won't be happy without preset management. Nobody wants to go to the menu hierarchy after a sound change and copy the respective settings from a piece of paper.

At least that's the case for me, I only use a few internal sounds that I like with my basic settings. I do everything else with external synths where I can save presets.

But I don't know if I'm a typical user. For me, the Sylphyo is more of a specialised controller than an instrument on its own.

We haven't abandoned anything, but Sylphyo updates have definitely taken a backseat. That said, the synth engine in the Sylphyo is unable to run a physical model as good as SWAM woodwinds (which runs on powerful, battery-hungry computers), that's just a hardware limitation.

This sound is based on a physical model that, by nature, has a fixed note range, so it can't really be changed.

Taking a closer look at SuperBooth and ... well ... it looks pretty daunting. I'm from the U.S. and it's an 8 hour red-eye each way. Tickets are shown as "Unavailable" on their site (and also no workshop postings).

Then ... accommodations are far away: 50 minute train ride + 10 min walk + 20 minute walk. That's a total of 3 hours of commuting each day.
Then there's the restrictions: can't bring gear (really??), can't buy anything, and "better bring cash".

And now ... No Aodyo ...

Not sure if I'm missing something ...

@Gromit Thanks! I didn't remember connecting the Link with a USB-A to USB-A cable to the PC when I updated it last time years ago. Oh well, the cable was only $5. Maybe I'll find a use for it sometime.

I connected the Sylphyo cable from the Link's power supply port to the PC and successfully updated the link.

I found that in both cases--the Sylphyo and the Link--the device has to be connected to the PC and powered on first, before running the update program.

@KDJ3992 Thanks for letting me know. Yes, it's a shame you had to pay to return it for repairs. It would be an even bigger problem if it had been out of warranty, which I think mine is now, especially without adequate discussion with Aodyo.

I'm under the impression it's done with STM32 MCUs, in which case it is update-able by a user with the right simple tools (usually just an ST-Link programmer or an STM32 Discovery board), without relying on the standard method, but also not without adequate discussion with Aodyo.

I finally gave in and updated mine to v1.2.0 a few days ago, successfully, on a PC with Windows 7. I haven't tried the new editor yet, but I mostly prefer to just use menu diving. I haven't explored setting up a MIDI controller for the new CC/NRPN mapping capabilities either, but that seems like it could be very useful.

I see this forum is now "protected" by reCaptcha. I know it had a spam problem, but I was under the impression most of those were from sweat shop workers, who spend all day solving Captchas, so aren't deterred by them at all. I am though. They annoy me so much, i can't focus for long enough to solve them. FWIW, pressing the headphones icon, for the audio version, is a lot simpler.

So many companies seem to end up like this. They start off with all the “we're doing this for you” stuff (no, they had an idea to make money) and when they get out of their depth or things go wrong, those who paid a LOT of money don't count at all. They'll probably start expecting us to feel sorry for them soon. Sure, that's startup capitalism, but they should be more honest to start with, especially to themselves.

I was able to get the rest of the 20 update sounds to work! But because I was uploading individual sounds, I had to individually import the ones that would not send to the synth, twice, [basically a second time right after doing the first time, without resetting the preset], and it worked.

For those who may have run into this problem if any [maybe my computer is just weird], this worked for me.

I did this way rather than in bulk, because I created some of my own sounds that occupied some of the presets between 30 and 50, and didn't want to lose them.

No. The Link only gets this information from the Sylphyo. As far as I understand Aodyo's comments (we have discussed such things here before), the communication from the Sylphyo to the Link is not MIDI, so we cannot simulate it by sending MIDI data.

By the way, I don't know of any device where you can remotely set the MIDI channel on the fly by sending MIDI commands.

If you want to change the transmit channel or send on multiple channels, you have to do it the traditional way, after the Link, with hardware or software. The receiving channel is only changeable with the Sylphyo.

There is no Sylphyo or Link based solution.

On a software route you can do whatever you want, on the hardware route you are tied to relatively expensive small devices. The usual boxes are Midi Solutions or the BomeBox.

I myself went with the BomeBox and meanwhile have all my controllers and two synths controlled by this system. Bome software and hardware is not cheap, but very good.

Here in the forum we have already discussed blocking the transmission of program changes and an option to prevent this has been proposed. At least I understood that the programmer recognised the problem. But with Aodyo's current devotion to Sylphyo, I wouldn't wait for a solution from this side.
