RE: disapointed
The latency thing is something we cannot reproduce.
Could you please confirm that it is still there even after a factory reset? If it's still there, the usual thing to do for diagnostics is to use MIDI monitor software and try to see if there is a significant delay between an action on the controller and new data being displayed on the screen. It would be very helpful if you could test your Sylphyo+Link using a MIDI monitor (see this article for help), ideally showing us a video of the delay.

RE: Unable to use iPad with latest version
Did you try the official 1.3.1 version from our website as well? There are some differences compared to 1.3.1b2.

RE: Pre Sale Enquire and Info NEEDED
From what I understand you'd like to know more about the Sylphyo's unique features and you found our communication lacking in this regard. I hope this post will help you understand the product better, and we will try to communicate better on our product in the future.
First of all, the Sylphyo and the EWI take quite different stances at what makes a good electronic wind instrument. This should not be surprising, as in the acoustic world there are many very different and equally successful designs for a wind instrument too.
What sets the Sylphyo apart from the EWI is that it is designed to fit a wider range of playing styles, notably those of non-reed woodwinds players (more on that later), and to provide greater and more intimate control over electronic sounds.Several features of the instrument contribute to its design intent. First, as air flows all the way through the instrument, the sensation while playing is much more "acoustic-like", and it allows a greater range of breath control techniques, while retaining the possibility to feel "closed" like an EWI. Then, there are techniques like "key-bend" and "shake vibrato" that are borrowed from some types of flutes. And as an extension of that, the Sylphyo also reacts to gestures on its back surface (the slider) and in the air (elevation, roll, compass control) thanks to its lighter weight. With time and practice it allows you to get much more timbral variations out of your sounds. This is what the Sylphyo aims at: intimate, physical, instrument-like control of your electronic sounds. As they're relatively novel, such features might look like "gadget gimmicks" if you don't think about the instrument as a whole, but videos like the Chat with Pedro series will show you how far you can go with it in a professional setting (of course we'd like to have more videos like this, but the product is still very young and not widespread).
As for the latency issue that popped up recently, this is very likely an individual issue having to do with the specific setup within which the Sylphyo is used. The Sylphyo itself is demonstrably one of the lowest latency controllers out there, even with the wireless option.
The Sylphyo was a wireless MIDI wind controller until around September 2018, where we made two important changes:
- We added an internal sound engine inside the Sylphyo itself.
- We changed the wireless receiver to make it a wireless audio/MIDI receiver.
So what do the internal sounds sound like? There's a pretty long overview of the seven first sounds, and the user guide has an up-to-date description of each sound, along with an accompanying video.
As you have seen, the internal sounds do not aim for realistic reproduction of acoustic sounds. This is for several reasons. First, it is extremely difficult to reproduce the sonic behavior of an acoustic instrument, and it's very computationally intensive, so much so that it'd be really costly to integrate into a mobile battery-powered instrument (and the battery wouldn't last long). We're planning to provide sounds with much acoustically-inspired behavior, but we're not aiming at reproducing some specific acoustic instrument. And the more important reason why we don't do that is that we feel the real power of the Sylphyo lies on the way you can control electronic sounds with it, so it'd be a waste to sacrifice all that control for realism. Acoustic-style rich behavior, that's a better thing to aim at in our opinion.
We're planning to gradually add more sounds and we're currently working on an editor that allows anyone to make presets with the elements of the sound engine we've developed.Maybe you'll come to the conclusion that there's nothing appealing to you with the Sylphyo. No big deal. People have different needs and it would be a bad idea to try to fulfill them all with a single product! If you just want a more recent version of your EWI and nothing else, then it's likely the Sylphyo will not suit you and that's OK! But if you're looking for something different, the Sylphyo is definitely an instrument to consider.
You'll find some technical details in the user guide, but the best place to get answers is to ask us or our community, either here, in the Sylphyo Exchange Facebook group, or privately (contact@aodyo.com).

RE: Connecting to Thor
Your MIDI settings will stay but they won't mess with the internal synth in both the Sylphyo and the Link. However if you use another external synth, you might want to set it up so as to use the same settings as Thor, so that everything you use is on the same page.
-
RE: Connecting to Thor
Go to the settings menu, select MIDI Mappings, and change the number of the CC that is appropriate for your use (cf. https://www.aodyo.com/support/sylphyo-userguide/#section-settings.midi-mappings).

RE: Issue updating to 1.3.1
We don't have a Mac with USB-C ports so we cannot yet test it, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. If you still can't update correctly, please send us a mail (support@aodyo.com) with screenshots and/or copies of the text you see in the Updater (both the error message if any, and the contents of the "Log Console" window that you can open before starting the update by clicking the "Log Console" item in the Help menu), as well as descriptions of what you see on the Sylphyo during and after the update.
-
RE: Connecting to Thor
The issue seems to be with the MIDI mappings Thor is expecting. I don't have an iPad, and there should be a section within Thor that allows you to setup which MIDI control to assign to which Thor parameter, but I can't find it after a quick web search. However, what I found is a thread listing what each CC is mapped to by default, and suggestions to make it work with a controller (https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/2697/thor-midi-learn). So you can just setup your Sylphyo to send the relevant CCs. Or maybe use a MIDI app that converts the Sylphyo CCs to what Thor expects: the post mentioned MidiBridge, but as it doesn't exist anymore you could try MidiFire or FreEWI (I didn't try these apps).
-
RE: Issue updating to 1.3.1
Was it something about a HID report? If so, try using a different USB cable and do not touch the cable or the Sylphyo during the update. If you still have trouble, please send us a mail (support@aodyo.com) with details and the contents of the Log Console (Help menu).
-

RE: The best sounds for Sylphyo
Both the VL-70m and the SWAM instruments are based on physical modelling, however they differ in how they implement the technology.
While the VL-70m looks like a pure physical modelling engine (with lots of possibilities and control opportunities), the SWAM virtual instruments have a hybrid engine that also uses samples to make the sound more realistic (but they offer fewer sound design opportunities).
SWAM instruments are also much more recent, run on a much more powerful computer, and sound much more realistic to me.
The MIDI implementation also looks much more robust on the SWAM instruments compared to the VL-70m.
As for latency, I haven't played enough with the VL-70m to give a definitive opinion. While the VL-70m doesn't have all the latency-inducing components of a PC/Mac (USB, audio drivers, non-realtime kernel…), some physical models can be slow to react by nature (it takes time for sound waves to propagate!).
On the other hand, if you get the proper setup, the latency of a SWAM virtual instrument can become negligible. What's a proper setup? I'd say either a PC with a PCI/PCIe/Thunderbolt sound card, or a Mac with a Thunderbolt sound card, with the lowest output buffer size possible and no active audio inputs, and our recommended SWAM settings. Having MIDI through a PCI card and not USB could shave off a few milliseconds as well.
Finally, you won't find any tin whistle on the SWAM instruments, but their flute is great, and maybe you could get something close to the whistle based on their piccolo flute. So both will play great with a Sylphyo, but then which one is best for you depends on what you find most important.

RE: Linking Problem after Update Links stays on yellow light
Great to hear that! As for the info, we've been a bit late on updating the user guide to reflect all the changes, but it should be online next week.
-
RE: Linking Problem after Update Links stays on yellow light
As your Sylphyo+Link already came with the latest version (1.3.0), you shouldn't have made an update, and you effectively did a downgrade to an older version that doesn't understand how the Link works, hence your situation. We'll update our website to be extra clear about this.
If you're on macOS, you can download this 1.3.0b1 update utility which should solve your problem.
Tell me if you're on Windows so that I can package an update for you.Was your Sylphyo upgraded or did you buy the Sylphyo+Link new?
-

RE: New Link
You can switch between the different internal sounds using the second quick setting (hold the Aodyo key with your left index and the middle octave key with your middle thumb, and press the up or down settings key to switch to another sound).
The Sylphyo currently doesn't offer a way to switch off the internal sounds, but if none of the virtual instruments in your DAW and other synths understand MIDI CC7 (Volume), you could set the volume to 0% on the Sylphyo when you don't want to hear the internal sound. -
RE: nuances....

RE: Unable to use iPad with latest version
@k0872 Thanks for your support. Fixing unpowered CCK support to possibly make it work like it did before is now very high on our to-do list! Sadly the power issues on iOS are mainly due to Apple's policy of restricting power usage even more with each release (but mostly for the devices that don't subscribe to their "walled-garden" MFI program). I think we can work around this by disabling some functionality, like the internal synth, either when detecting the host is an iDevice or upon user request. When it's ready we'll be happy to have you try our fixes on your iDevices.
The finger vibrato you're also eagerly waiting for will be ready later (for the next big software release), but again we'll contact you to help us test and refine this functionality. -

RE: Unable to use iPad with latest version
Yes, there's a number of things we'll try, including selectively turning off the internal synth, to improve the situation if the new firmware doesn't correct that. You'll receive a mail with an update to the Sylphyo Link and instructions on how to install it once it's uploaded to our servers.

RE: Unable to use iPad with latest version
(Although we already discussed this privately, I took the liberty to also leave an answer here because it could be of interest for other users.)
The only cable you need is the one included in the package: a mini-USB cable. To connect the Link to your computer, just plug the larger end into one of the USB ports of your computer, and the smaller end into the "USB Power Supply" port of your Link. To connect the Link to your iPad or iPhone, you must use a powered Camera Connection Kit (CCK; made by Apple and not included) and plug the larger end into the CCK, while the smaller end is plugged into the "USB Power Supply" port on your Link.
The larger USB port on the Link is used to connect a controller to the Link; in this case the Link acts as a USB host. -

RE: Mouthpiece with Midi control functions
Now that the new Sylphyo is out, we should have a bit more time to research for that mouthpiece! We don't expect it to be a "substitute for a reed" like in other products, but it should be configurable enough to be used as a way to perform vibratos and bends with the mouth.
-
RE: midi out huge delay/ latency with new sync unit
The MIDI output should not have latency. This could be due to a problem in the configuration of your Sylphyo. Please try the following things:
- disable Dynamic Velocity (set it to 127)
- decrease the rate of the breath MIDI messages (higher rates are known to cause issues with old synths like the VL70m, depending on your playing style) in the settings menu > MIDI Mapping > Breath More Options > Breath Rate (set it to Low or Very low)
- perform a Factory reset (in the Settings menu)
If you have another MIDI synth handy, could you please check that it behaves similarly with respect to latency? If not, then something must be off in the configuration of your VL70m. If you still have problems we'll try to find a VL70m and set it up to reproduce your issue.
-
RE: Unable to use iPad with latest version
The new Sylphyo and Link consume a bit more power than before due to their internal synth, hence the need to power the Camera Connection Kit (CCK). We tried the few iDevices and iOS versions we had at hand and it worked well, but we are aware that internally iDevices are very different and that some things still need to be ironed out.
We're currently beta-testing a firmware version that might work a bit better for some devices and generally make things easier, and we'd be glad to send it to you (send us your Windows or Mac version at contact@aodyo.com), but you can already try to follow this order when connecting a Link to your iDevice: turn off your Sylphyo first (very important), connect the Link to the CCK adapter, power the adapter, connect the adapter to your iDevice, and only then power on your Sylphyo.

RE: Sylphyo : pack a 1000 euros,

RE: Change settings to increase volume
Are you talking about playing with GarageBand, the Bench, or both?
If you're talking about Garageband, then try doing various articulations (e.g., instead of "fuuu" do "tuuu" and "TUUU") and try to see how it impacts volume. If different attacks result in drastic differences in volume, you might want to try to disable "Dynamic Velocity" by going to the Settings menu > MIDI Mappings and setting Velocity to 127 instead of Dynamic.
If you've got the same issue with the Bench on your computer, then maybe something is off with your Sylphyo. In this case, please send us a photo of the Diagnostics screen (Settings menu > Diagnostics) to support@aodyo.com and we'll try to check if everything is OK.
If everything is OK but you have trouble producing enough breath to play comfortably, you might want to try to cover part of the hole in the bell at your convenience with some adhesive tape or blu-tack. You can also increase or decrease the breath sensitivity by setting the Range value in the Breath section of the Settings menu. For instance, I usually like to cover 3/4 of the hole and set the Range as high as possible (with a linear Curve).

RE: Sylphyo as tinwhistle
@k0872 I understand that without the finger-vibrato your Sylphyo doesn't fit your needs, but what's wrong in using your own hand-made controller?
The same update that will improve the tin whistle fingering will also include your suggestions for finger vibratos in the celtic fingering, as well as a long-awaited solution for sax and flute players based on key splits. All these improvements will rely on the same foundations that I have yet to finish writing. There are a few more urgent things for us to do right now, such as the release of the synth extension, but I'll post something here as soon as we have a first beta on this! Are we allowed to contact you if we have doubts or need details on the finger vibrato thing?
-
RE: Quality of the new internal synth
The internal sounds won't feature realistic imitations of acoustic instruments like the SWAM, because it's very hard to do and would consume tremendous power. The sounds are rather optimized for playability and expressiveness, and we try to cover a wide sound palette. Most of the first sounds are a combination of VA and physical modelling synthesis.
The offer will gradually expand as we release new sounds and open the sound engine.
-
RE: near zero latency?
If your computer and audio interface are good, you can get to very small latencies. It'll still be higher than the most direct path, which will be from the Sylphyo to its upcoming internal soundcard to its headphone jack, but fortunately you're not likely to perceive the difference if you have good equipment.
Here's a quick recap of the respective latencies induced by each element (as a rule of thumb, as it's a bit more complex in reality):
- wireless system: less than 1ms
- USB-MIDI: at least 1ms, up to 10ms depending on your OS and computer
- computer audio: from 2ms to around 10ms for USB audio interfaces, but less than 2ms can be achieved with Thunderbolt/PCI/PCIe audio interfaces, a powerful computer and good settings
So in this gross estimate, at best, you could achieve 3-4ms latency (and a slight bit of jitter) with a very good fine-tuned computer, from the moment the Sylphyo outputs a MIDI message to the moment the computer outputs sound. When the internal synth is available, this latency collapses to a constant 1,5ms. It's unlikely you can hear the difference between both
cases, but maintaining this kind of performance with a computer is hard.If you have a MIDI synth you can connect to the wireless receiver, you just add 1ms to the synth's own latency, so that can be good.
The main point is: when it comes to latency, the wireless system is not the bottleneck, because it has been designed specifically to this purpose and seems to do its job well.

RE: Sylphyo as tinwhistle
The tin whistle updates discussed here will likely be implemented in a software update centered on fingerings, along with important and long-awaited changes for sax, flute, etc. We don't have a date for this release, but it's highly likely we'll post something here once we have a beta you'll be able to try.

RE: New internal synth
First there will be a fixed selection of sounds that are designed to harness the whole potential of the instrument (so many nuances possible). We'll regularly add new sounds through software updates. Then, gradually, we'll open the synth engine for edition and creation of user sounds.

RE: The new Aodyo Link receiver
The sound module on the receiver is the same as the one inside the Sylphyo, and while it might change in the future, for now they are limited to a single voice at the same time.
